"The USTA Quick Start tennis program, which Racquets Serving Hope has provided for Lea, is a stellar success this year. The students line up with enthusiasm, and passion, to participate during the Socialized Recess lunch periods. The kids regularly make comments like, "tennis is my favorite sport", or "I want to be a tennis player when I grow up". This isfrom a population who, many of which, have never picked up a racquet until the program arrived at Lea... The success is shown in the smiles radiating from the kids when they play"

School Tennis

During the 2010 to 2011 school year, we have mostly been working with children in the West Philadelphia Elementary Schools and teaching them tennis during recess and after-school. We have seen the recent budget cuts directly impact our elementary schools, as we sadly receive word that some of our key school coordinators will not be returning next year due to these cuts. Although our goal is to grow these extracurricular opportunities for the children, we realize that right now, it is even more crucial to build upon our current programs just so we can prevent eliminating these recess and after-school options altogether.

As Federal and State funding continues to implement large budget cuts in our public school systems, our goal at Racquets Serving Hope is to increase extra-curricular youth participation in these activities. We hope to grow our programs that focus on providing recess and after-school activities to the Elementary Schools of Philadelphia. The large cutback and even elimination of programs such as music, art, and physical education is, in our opinion, extremely devastating for the growth and development of any child. We feel that extra-curricular youth activities provide hands-on opportunities for youth to learn the importance of character, teamwork, and responsibility.

We hope to continue fostering a positive relationship between the University of Pennsylvania and our Philadelphia communities. The students at the University of Pennsylvania have helped encourage many of the children in our neighboring communities through various mentoring programs, such as Big Brother/Big Sister, Community Student School Partnerships run by the Netter Center, and through coaching and mentoring our youth for our programs at Racquets Serving Hope. We hope to continue cultivating the relationship between the University of Pennsylvania and the neighboring Philadelphia communities so that we can expand upon the positive influences available to our children.
